What is a Concrete Quantity Calculator?

What is Concrete Quantity?

The Concrete Quantity Calculator computes required raw constituent quantities (cement bags, sand, aggregate) based on structural dimensions and mix proportions.

Formula

Wet Volume = Length × Width × Thickness | Dry Volume = Wet Volume × 1.54
Cement Volume = Dry Volume × (Cement Ratio ÷ Total Ratio Sum)
Cement Bags = (Cement Volume × 1440 kg/m³) ÷ 50 kg

Variables Explanation

- L, W, T: Structure dimensions in meters.
- 1.54 Factor: Dry shrinkage volume factor.
- Mix Ratios: M10 (1:3:6), M15 (1:2:4), M20 (1:1.5:3), M25 (1:1:2).

How to Calculate

1. Select concrete grade mix ratio (e.g. M20).
2. Input slab/footing length, width, and thickness in meters.
3. View net wet volume, required dry volume, cement bags, sand, and aggregate weight.

Worked Example

Slab: 12m × 6m × 0.15m = 10.8 m³ Wet Volume.
Dry Volume = 10.8 × 1.54 = 16.632 m³.
Grade M20 (1:1.5:3, Sum = 5.5).
Cement Vol = (16.632 × 1 / 5.5) = 3.024 m³.
Cement Bags = (3.024 × 1440) ÷ 50 = 87 Bags.
Sand = (16.632 × 1.5 / 5.5) × 1.6 = 7.26 Tons.
Aggregate = (16.632 × 3 / 5.5) × 1.5 = 13.61 Tons.

Practical Construction & Project Controls Use

Material ordering for ready-mix concrete (RMC) deliveries, site batching control, and BOQ material cost estimation.

Understanding the Result

Outputs exact bill of materials required for casting structural concrete components.

Limitations & Assumptions

Calculates nominal mix proportions. High-strength commercial structures should follow lab-tested mix design sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 1.54 used as the dry volume factor in concrete calculations?

Dry materials contain air voids; when water is added, volume shrinks by ~54%. Thus dry volume = 1.54 × wet volume.

How many bags of cement are in 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete?

Standard nominal M20 mix requires approximately 8 bags of cement (50kg each) per m³ of wet concrete.

What is the density of cement used in calculations?

Bulk density of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is taken as 1,440 kg/m³.

What is the difference between PCC and RCC?

PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) has no steel reinforcement, while RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) incorporates steel rebar.

How much water is added per bag of cement?

Standard water-cement ratio is 0.45 to 0.50, requiring 22.5 to 25 liters of water per 50kg bag.
